Brussels Hosts Strategic Talks Between Turkmenistan and the EU

Turkmenistan and EU Hold 7th Inter-Parliamentary Meeting in Brussels
 

On November 14, 2024, the 7th inter-parliamentary meeting between Turkmenistan and the European Union (EU) was held at the European Parliament building in Brussels. The event was attended by representatives from both sides, focusing on strengthening cooperation across key areas.
 

Delegation Leaders

The Turkmen delegation was led by Yusupguly Eshshayev, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms, while the EU delegation was headed by Juzi Princi, Chair of the EU Delegation for Relations with Central Asia and Mongolia.
 

Key Discussion Points
 

  1. Human Rights and Social Policy
    The Turkmen side emphasized its commitment to protecting human rights and strengthening social guarantees in partnership with the EU, the OSCE, and the UN. Recent progress in reducing statelessness was highlighted.
     

  2. Economic Diversification and Investment
    Discussions focused on Turkmenistan's efforts to diversify its economy and expand trade and investment ties with the EU. Legislative measures aimed at improving market accessibility and fostering foreign investment were presented.
     

  3. Regional Connectivity
    The strategic role of Central Asia as a bridge between Europe and Asia was underlined. Talks included regional transport and infrastructure projects aimed at boosting connectivity.
     

  4. Transport and Logistics
    Participants acknowledged the successful establishment of a coordination platform for the transport sector between Central Asia and the EU, launched during the visit of EU Commissioner Jutta Urpilainen to Ashgabat in October.
     

  5. Education and Academic Exchange
    The Turkmen delegation reaffirmed its proposal to organize a meeting between education ministers and university leaders from Central Asia and the EU to strengthen academic collaboration.

  • Both sides expressed interest in deepening economic relations and enhancing regional collaboration.
     
  • An agreement was reached to hold the 8th inter-parliamentary meeting in Turkmenistan.
     

This meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of Turkmenistan and the EU to strengthen bilateral cooperation and explore new avenues for partnership.
