Advancing AI in Education: Insights from Turkmenistan

A groundbreaking scientific and practical conference titled “Artificial Intelligence in the Education System of Turkmenistan” was held, marking a significant step toward integrating AI technologies into the country’s education sector.

 

The conference was organized under the “Cooperation Roadmap” between the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan and UNESCO’s Institute for Information Technologies in Education (IITE) for 2024–2025, approved on November 9, 2023. It aimed to foster international collaboration, improve education management systems, enhance digital competencies among teachers, and adapt advanced technologies to the specific needs of Turkmenistan’s education system.

 

Deputy Minister of Education A. Atayev delivered the opening speech, emphasizing the importance of the initiative. Tao Zhang, Director of UNESCO’s IITE, and Zhao Xie, Regional Vice President of Huawei, also addressed the participants via online platforms.

 

Key topics discussed during the event included:
 

  • A draft strategy for AI development in education, presented by R. Mahmudov, Acting Head of the Digital Systems and Information Security Department of Turkmenistan’s Ministry of Education.
  • Teachers’ and students’ competencies in AI, explained by Oksana Chigisheva, a specialist at UNESCO’s IITE.
  • International educational platforms for AI, highlighted by Xiaohan Bi, Deputy Director of UNESCO’s International Centre for Higher Education Innovation.
  • Preparing students for industry challenges using AI, explored by Durdygylych Mergenov from the Innovation and Information Center of the Ministry of Education.
     

The conference represents a collaborative effort to position Turkmenistan at the forefront of AI-driven educational transformation while addressing global best practices and local priorities.
