The fourth edition of the Red Book of Turkmenistan includes 23 new species of rare or endangered plants. This was reported by the “Neytralnyy Turkmenistan” newspaper.
The juniper, also known as the Turkmen juniper, has been added to the Red Data Book. Additionally, new plants such as the snow-loving valerian, Regel's pear, Narbut's iris, brilliant, Hissar and Turkestan tulips, Albert's eremurus, Oshanin's onion, and Ophrys ophrys ovodonosus have been included in the list.
The German Muskmelon, previously thought to be extinct in Turkmenistan, was rediscovered by botanists in 2021 and has been added to the Red Book. The botanical section of the Red Book of Turkmenistan now contains information on 109 rare and endangered plant species, including 15 trees and shrubs. In total, the republic is home to over 2,500 plant species.
As the living conditions of animals and plants are constantly changing, the information in the Red Data Book is regularly updated. As a result, some species may be removed from the rare category while others may be added. The first edition of the Red Data Book of Turkmenistan was published in 1985, the second in 1999, and the third in 2011.
