The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan is preparing for the upcoming 80th session of the UN General Assembly, a milestone event for the international community. Building on the initiatives of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, the country has drafted its Priority Positions, which define Turkmenistan’s foreign policy goals for the next political year.
According to official media, the document highlights several major areas: peace and security, sustainable development, transport and energy diplomacy, digitalization, environmental protection, and humanitarian cooperation.
Turkmenistan intends to introduce a new agenda item – “Neutrality for the Sake of Peace and Security” – and will submit draft resolutions on the role of neutrality in international relations and on establishing an International Day of Mediation. The country also plans to contribute to a UN guidance paper on neutrality principles and begin consultations on creating a UN Mediation Chamber.
Other initiatives include declaring 2026–2035 as the UN Decade for Sustainable Transport, adopting a resolution on stable energy connectivity, creating a Global Digital Integration Platform, establishing a Regional Center to Combat Desertification in Central Asia, and hosting the Second Caspian Environmental Forum in 2026.
On the humanitarian front, Turkmenistan proposes organizing an international conference “Women, Peace and Security”, launching a training center for young peacekeepers in Ashgabat, designating an International Day of Multilingual Diplomacy, and adopting a resolution on the cultural heritage of the Great Silk Road.
In the legal sphere, Turkmenistan suggests proclaiming 2028 as the Year of International Law and is preparing its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2031–2032.
The 80th session of the UN General Assembly will open on September 9, 2025, and close on September 8, 2026.
