Turkmenistan and Malaysia celebrate 30 years of energy cooperation at Ashgabat forum

An international conference dedicated to the 30th anniversary of cooperation between Turkmenistan and Malaysia in the oil and gas sector was held in Ashgabat on 19 June as part of the official visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to Turkmenistan.

The forum, titled "Turkmenistan–Malaysia: 30 Years of Mutually Beneficial Cooperation in the Oil and Gas Industry," brought together government officials, representatives of energy companies, industry experts and business leaders from both countries.

President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim attended the event, which highlighted the long-standing partnership between Turkmenistan and Malaysia in the energy sector.

Speaking at the forum, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov described Malaysia as one of Turkmenistan's important partners in the Asia-Pacific region and noted the significant contribution of Malaysian companies to the development of the country's oil and gas industry.

A central focus of the conference was the role of PETRONAS, which has operated in Turkmenistan for three decades and remains one of the country's largest foreign investors. Participants reviewed the results of joint projects in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea and discussed prospects for further cooperation in hydrocarbon exploration, production and processing.

The event also served as a platform for exchanging views on technological innovation, sustainable energy development and investment opportunities in the oil and gas sector.

Several cooperation documents were signed on the sidelines of the forum, including agreements involving PETRONAS, Türkmennebit and Türkmengaz aimed at further expanding partnership in the energy industry.

The conference underscored the strategic importance of Turkmen-Malaysian cooperation and highlighted the shared interest of both countries in developing long-term energy and investment partnerships.
