Bilateral agreements pave way for closer Turkmen-Malaysian ties

Turkmenistan and Malaysia sign agreements to expand cooperation

Turkmenistan and Malaysia signed a package of agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation during the official visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to Ashgabat.

The documents were exchanged following talks between President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, reflecting the two countries' commitment to expanding cooperation across a range of sectors.

The agreements cover areas including civil aviation, science, education, diplomatic training and energy. They are expected to create new opportunities for collaboration between government agencies, research institutions and businesses in both countries.

Among the key documents signed were an Air Services Agreement between the Governments of Turkmenistan and Malaysia, a Memorandum of Understanding between the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan and the Academy of Sciences of Malaysia, as well as agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation in diplomatic training and professional development.

Additional documents were concluded between Turkmenistan's energy sector institutions and PETRONAS, further reinforcing the long-standing partnership between the two countries in the oil and gas industry.

The signing ceremony formed part of a broader programme of high-level meetings focused on deepening political dialogue and expanding economic cooperation. The two sides also discussed opportunities to increase trade, investment and transport connectivity.

Observers note that the agreements provide an institutional framework for advancing bilateral cooperation and reflect the growing scope of Turkmen-Malaysian relations beyond the energy sector.

Malaysia is one of Turkmenistan's key partners in Southeast Asia, while cooperation in the oil and gas industry has served as an important pillar of bilateral relations for more than three decades.
