The economic forum held within the framework of the Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA) of the United Nations has officially opened in Ashgabat. The event once again highlighted the region’s strategic role as a major global transport and energy hub.
Speaking at the forum, Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan Babanyyaz Yalakow emphasized that mutually beneficial cooperation forms the foundation of interaction within the SPECA framework. He noted that the advantageous geographical location and rich natural resources of participating countries create favorable conditions for large-scale infrastructure investments and long-term regional stability.
“Our region is one of the world’s key energy and transit centers. Therefore, consistently strengthening its economic potential is crucial for sustainable development,” the Deputy Minister stated.
According to B.Yalakow, 2025 became a landmark year for SPECA under Turkmenistan’s chairmanship. Special attention was given to institutional development and the expansion of trade cooperation. In 2025, Turkmenistan’s trade turnover with SPECA countries exceeded USD 2.2 billion, marking a 15 percent increase compared to 2024, while their share in the country’s foreign trade rose to over 11 percent.
Particular emphasis was placed on Turkmenistan’s leading role in shaping Eurasian logistics. The development of the East–West and North–South transport corridors remains a priority, including projects such as the Iran–Oman–Turkmenistan–Uzbekistan corridor and the Lapis Lazuli route linking Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye.
The importance of the Turkmenbashi International Seaport was also highlighted, as it connects the Caspian and Black Seas and provides access to Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region.
